Understanding the assessment question
A psychological assessment gathers and considers information about emotional, behavioural or other aspects of psychological functioning. Its purpose is to address a defined question, rather than to apply the same process to every person.
Ramsay & Associates provides psychological assessments by appointment. In-person assessments are available by arrangement in Hamilton, Niagara and surrounding areas; contact the practice to discuss the service, location and clinician availability relevant to your enquiry.

What an assessment may involve
The Canadian Psychological Association explains that assessment can draw on a discussion of current concerns and personal history, with psychological tests used where appropriate. The specific approach depends on the question and the clinician’s assessment of what information is needed.
Ask the practice what is proposed for your referral, why any tests or records are relevant and how the findings will be explained. Session numbers, testing arrangements and report requirements should be confirmed for the particular appointment rather than assumed from a general description.
Assessment is different from psychotherapy
Assessment aims to clarify a question about psychological functioning. Psychotherapy focuses on working toward therapeutic goals. If you are unsure which you need, describe your purpose in general terms when contacting the office and ask which type of enquiry is appropriate.
Before proceeding, discuss consent, confidentiality, fees and whether findings will be shared with anyone else.
